At Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania (VCOP), we believe that reliable transportation can be life-changing. It can mean the difference between getting to work or missing an opportunity, making a medical appointment or postponing care, reconnecting with family, or simply regaining independence.

That belief was brought to life once again as VCOP helped facilitate another car donation to a veteran in need —continuing a powerful pattern of service and community support.

A Community Effort That Makes a Real Difference

This most recent donation is not an isolated act of kindness. It follows two previous vehicle donations , including one completed in December, making this the third car donated through VCOP-supported efforts .

Each of these moments represents more than a vehicle—it represents dignity, stability, and hope .

Ending the Year With Service and Gratitude

The December car donation was a meaningful way to close out the year. A heartfelt thank you goes to Steve and Mike , whose efforts helped make this donation possible. Mike serves as Executive Director of Daily Operations at VCOP , and both Mike and Steve are members of the Rotary Club of Spring Township . Their leadership and generosity are a powerful reminder of what can happen when community partners step up to support those who have served our country.

Ending the year with an act of service like this reinforced what VCOP stands for— compassion, action, and unwavering support for veterans .

Honoring a Life Rebuilt Through Service, Faith, and Brotherhood

The Beginning of a Warrior’s Journey

In 1984, a young man from Northampton, Pennsylvania, graduated from high school with a restless drive and a calling to serve something greater than himself. Two years later, in 1986, Michael Weil raised his right hand and joined the United States Army , beginning a journey that would change him forever.

He served as an 11X Unassigned Infantryman before being assigned to a Mechanized Infantry Platoon with the 2nd Armored Division Forward, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment . From Fort Hood, Texas , to Germany , and ultimately to the deserts of Kuwait during Desert Storm , Mike’s courage was tested in the harshest conditions imaginable. For a year, he fought in combat — witnessing the toll of war on soldiers and souls alike.

When he returned to Germany in 1990 and completed his tour in 1992, Mike came home to Walnutport, Pennsylvania , ready to start over. But as many veterans discover, coming home was the hardest battle of all.

The Battle After the War

Transitioning from soldier to civilian, Mike worked as a heavy equipment operator and later as an ironworker with Sidleck Cranes , quickly rising to foreman within a year. In 2008, he became a millwright at Smithhahn in Bethlehem — and within two weeks, he was promoted to supervisor.

From the outside, success came easy. But on the inside, the war never ended.

Behind the strength and skill was a man silently battling PTSD , anger , and grief . The military had taught him how to fight — but not how to heal. In 1992, when his wife left and he became the sole parent of their two young daughters , Mike buried his pain deep inside. He worked endlessly to provide for them, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. But beneath the long hours and the steady paycheck, he was unraveling — numbing the ache with work, drugs, and alcohol. He climbed every ladder he could find, but every summit felt emptier than the last.

In 2018 , when his children were grown and his purpose seemed gone, the weight of it all finally broke him. Mike lost everything — his home, his family, his friends — and ended up on the streets, alone with nothing but a backpack , a birth certificate , and his DD-214 .

Hitting Bottom — and Finding Hope

Homeless and hopeless, Mike landed in the psychiatric ward at Horsham Clinic . That’s where a door cracked open. The clinic connected him with MAVRIC (Military and Veterans Information Center) , and for the first time in years, he reached out for help.

Through MAVRIC, he met Paul Fisher , another veteran and owner of Tactical Plumbing , who helped him get back on his feet. That spark of kindness lit a fire Mike thought was long extinguished.

Through Trinity Bible Fellowship Church in Blandon , and volunteers like Donna Russell , Mike began handing out food to homeless camps in Reading and Pottstown . There, he met Pastor Scott from New Hanover Evangelical Church — a meeting that would forever alter his path.

While handing out meals, Mike realized something powerful:

“I was the man I was feeding.”

That moment of self-recognition changed everything. He attended a VCOP Stand Down — but old wounds surfaced, and at that standdown, he erupted in anger, shouting in pain for five long minutes.

When he stopped, he braced for rejection. But instead, the crowd embraced him. They said, “You’re in the right place, brother.”

That day, he met Chris “Topher” Bower — a Marine, a mentor, and the friend who would help save his life.

A Mission Reborn

The acceptance he found through VCOP gave Mike something he hadn’t felt in years: belonging . The suicidal thoughts, the isolation, the shame — slowly began to fade. He had brothers and sisters again. He had purpose.

He vowed to give others what he had so desperately needed : hope.

Through Pastor Scott and Donna, Mike began collecting food and clothing for other veterans. He hasn’t missed a VCOP Stand Down in Reading or Pottstown since 2021 . There, he met fellow veteran Ron Long , who invited him to help with Toys for Tots — and another lifelong friendship was born.

Rebuilding a Life of Service

In 2021, a friend took him to the Oley Fire Company , where he fulfilled a childhood dream: becoming a firefighter . They offered him a place to stay above the firehouse — a safe haven that gave him roots again. For the first time in decades, Mike had both a home and a family .

Then came a call that would shape his next chapter. In 2022, VCOP asked Mike to manage the Taft House , a veterans’ transitional home. He accepted without hesitation. With the house came a garage and basement — and Mike saw not storage, but opportunity.

He filled those spaces with food, clothing, and supplies for veterans in need.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Through Pastor Scott , Mike was introduced to Pastor Keith from Chosen 300 Ministries — and that connection opened the door to something extraordinary. What began as a small effort to feed and clothe veterans quickly grew into a massive outreach effort serving entire communities. As VCOP Stand Downs continued, generosity began to multiply. The Ca ptain from the Oley Fire Department , whose friend worked at Kimberly-Clark , asked a simple question: “Do you need toilet paper for veterans?” That single act sparked an incredible chain reaction. One pallet turned into two, then ten — until, by the end of the first year, over one million dollars’ worth of products had been distributed, including paper goods, adult and children’s diapers, and essential hygiene items for veterans and families in need.

Mike’s mission kept growing. While connecting supplies to local shelters and nonprofits like Hannah’s Hope and Mary’s Shelter , he met Kris Folk , who asked him to drive a truck to pick up pallets from Amazon. What started as a simple favor turned into the delivery of over $160,000 of products in just four months — all going directly to those who needed them most. His partnership with Mary’s Shelter continues to this day, and in November 2025 , VCOP will donate a van to help expand their outreach. Every mile, every pallet, and every delivery tells the same story — of a man who turned his pain into purpose and made compassion his calling.

Today, Mike continues to collaborate with churches, nonprofits, and ministries across Berks County , including partnerships with Amazon , Lowe’s, and Christian Ministry Technical Services , to deliver food, water, and supplies to veterans, families, flood victims, and third-world missions.

A Life Transformed

The man who once felt unworthy now stands as a beacon of service, strength, and gratitude.
He didn’t just rebuild his life — he’s helping rebuild others.

He remains active with Oley Fire Company, Rotary of Sinking Spring, and partners with 15 churches , 25 ministries , and 18 nonprofits — all united by one mission: to lift others up.

The Heart of a True Hero

From a soldier in Desert Storm to a man who lost everything — and then found his way back through faith, brotherhood, and service — Mike’s story isn’t just one of survival. It’s a story of grace, resilience, and the unbreakable power of the human spirit .

He has proven that even when life burns everything to the ground, the human spirit can still rise — stronger, humbler, and filled with purpose.

Mike often says he doesn’t do it for recognition — he does it for the next veteran who feels hopeless, unseen, or alone.

Because he remembers exactly what that feels like. And he’ll never let another brother or sister stand in that darkness alone.

Remembering Chris “Topher” L. Bower — A True Friend, Veteran, and Dedicated Volunteer

The Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania (VCOP) has suffered an immeasurable loss with the sudden passing of our dear friend, board member, and lead transportation volunteer, Chris “Topher” L. Bower .

Topher was more than a volunteer — he was family. His dedication, humor, and compassion touched everyone who had the honor of knowing him. Whether it was driving a fellow veteran to an appointment, helping at events, or simply showing up with a smile and a helping hand, Topher embodied what it means to live a life of service.

This week we unexpectedly lost a great man — Chris Bower, a.k.a. “Topher” ; a father, husband, dedicated and passionate volunteer, veteran, warrior, leader, friend, brother, and proud United States Marine. He served as Executive Director of VCOP and President of the Armed Forces Brotherhood , leading with heart, strength, and a deep commitment to his fellow veterans. Through his leadership, Topher helped build bridges, create opportunities, and provide hope for those who served. His presence, energy, and unwavering dedication will be felt for years to come.

His passing leaves a void not only in our organization but in the hearts of all of us who shared countless miles, meals, and memories with him. The friendships and bonds he built within VCOP will forever be part of our story — a reminder of how one person’s kindness and commitment can make a lasting impact on an entire community.

Semper Fidelis, always faithful, the Marine Corps moto are words that he lived. He was the example to follow.

We can say, "Fair winds and following seas", "Until Valhalla", but there's not enough words to express the loss his family, friends, and the Veterans he helped will feel.

You will be missed, Brother.

SAVE 22: A Day of Remembrance, Awareness, and Hope

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the community gathered at the corner of Broadcasting & Paper Mill Road in Wyomissing for a powerful and emotional event— SAVE 22: Suicide Awareness & Prevention . Hosted by the Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania (VCOP) , Veterans Making A Difference , and the Rotary Club of Spring Township Centennial , the event was about more than awareness—it was about connection, remembrance, and action.

Honoring Lives Lost

One of the most striking moments of the event was the planting of 660 flags —each representing a veteran lost to suicide. That number represents the heartbreaking statistic of 22 veterans lost every single day, 660 every month . Standing among the rows of flags was a powerful reminder of the urgency of this crisis and the need for compassion, awareness, and open dialogue.

A Moving Start: The National Anthem

The day began with a deeply moving performance by the Berks County Youth Choir , whose voices rang out in unity and respect. The performance set a reverent tone for the event, reminding attendees of the power of community and the importance of honoring those we have lost.

Changing the Narrative on Suicide

This event also tied into the global theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (2024–2026) : Changing the Narrative on Suicide. Suicide is not just a personal tragedy—it is a public health crisis with profound social, emotional, and economic impacts. SAVE 22 is part of a movement to break the silence, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations that can save lives.

Personal Courage and Community Support

Mike from VCOP shared an incredibly personal moment, saying, “I was that guy we’re talking about. Fortunately, I am still here to talk about it—and this is why I do what I do.” His words captured the heart of the event: hope, survival, and the power of helping others. Mike’s dedication to supporting veterans shows what compassion and connection can accomplish.

A Day of Unity and Awareness

The event offered more than remembrance—it offered a way forward. Families, veterans, and community members came together to honor lives, learn about suicide prevention, and pledge to change the narrative. Free food, refreshments, and meaningful conversations made SAVE 22 not only an event but a shared mission.

Why This Matters

Every life lost to suicide is one too many. Awareness, compassion, and connection are essential to prevention. SAVE 22 was a reminder that we all have a role to play—whether by offering support, listening without judgment, or simply showing up.

Serving those who served—with dignity, respect, and care.

A Mission That Started Small

Back in 2007, a handful of us came together with a simple goal: to help homeless and at-risk veterans. We didn’t have a formal plan, just a shared belief that no veteran should go without a hot meal, clean clothes, or basic necessities. That first effort grew into something we now call Stand Down , and it became the heartbeat of everything we do.

From an Idea to a Coalition

Over the years, Stand Down grew bigger than we ever imagined. More volunteers showed up. More organizations stepped in to help. By 2015, it was clear we needed something stronger than just a loose network of good intentions. That’s when the Veterans Coalition of Pennsylvania (VCOP) officially became a nonprofit.

How We Serve Today

What started with food and clothing has grown into much more. Today, VCOP is proud to serve veterans and their families through:

Stand Down Services – A place where veterans can find meals, clothing, hygiene items, and connections to vital resources.
Transportation Services – Safe, reliable rides to medical appointments, outpatient procedures, and VA visits—covering more than 1,000 miles each week.
Community Support & Outreach – From clothing and food drives to partnerships with local groups, we’re building networks of care that last far beyond one event.

Why We Keep Going

Every veteran has a story. Some stories are filled with triumph, others with struggle—but all are deserving of respect and compassion. We believe in meeting veterans where they are and making sure they know they’re not alone.
